A genetically modified organism or GMO is any kind of living being which has had its DNA altered in some way, typically to provide benefits to humans. Typically organisms are modified to provide increased resources. Genetic modification can be done … Continue reading GMO OMG
Throughout this biology course and many others one is likely to be taught, a student learns that every trait we possess is a result of genes and therefore genetic information, however this may not be the case. A trait is … Continue reading Is There a Genetic Cause for Stuttering
Fermentation is a catabolic process which takes place in the cytoplasm of any cell where sugar is broken down into either lactic acid or ethyl alcohol. Fermentation is an anaerobic process meaning it occurs in the absence of oxygen. First a sugar, typically glucose goes through glycolysis, this creates 2 pyruvic acid molecules, 2 ATP molecules are also synthesized from 2ADP. 2 NADH molecules are also present from glycolysis during fermentation. If an organism were aerobic the pyruvic acid molecules produced would continue through cellular respiration to produce even more ATP, however in anaerobic organisms, or those without oxygen, the process of fermentation … Continue reading Fermentation Explanation
I had the opportunity along with my biology class to participate in a microbiology experiment at the University of Regina. This experiment involved gathering samples of bacteria from various surfaces and attempting to grow or ‘culture’ these bacteria by spreading … Continue reading Bacteria and Germaphobia
Evolution and natural selection apply and influence all organisms at all times, and so do selective pressures like sexual selection, which is natural selection driven by the preference of specific traits in a mate. Sexual selection is determined and influenced … Continue reading Sexual Selection and You
Evolution by definition is a change in a population of organisms over many successive generations. Evolution is responsible for all of the diversity on Earth we can see today, as evolution proposes a way for organisms to change over time and … Continue reading On The Moral And Ethical Implications of Evolution and Science in General.
